Abstract

The Department of Energy & Media (E & M) operates a power plant at voestalpine Donawitz and supplies the located companies, among others with process steam, which is used in various production processes. Amount and profile of the process steam consump-tion affect the security of supply and costs. The aim of this work is the optimization of the process steam consumption of voestalpine in Donawitz. Therefore alternative processes should be identified and evaluated technically and economically. Further optimization measures on existing processes should be found. To get an overview of the steam consumption, steam profiles of individual plants were created and annual consumption calculated. For economic evaluations, the production costs of vapor were determined for various process steam generators. Particular attention has been paid to the plants with the highest process steam consump-tion, which are located in the steel plant. These are the two evaporative coolers for cooling the crucible gas and the two vacuum pumps for the treatment of steel. The process steam of the evaporative coolers is used for the atomization of water. There is also the possibility of using nitrogen for atomization but even if the resulting disadvantages such as the reduction of the heating value would be offset by the saving of steam, the heat of the crucible gas should be used by heat exchangers. The steam jet vacuum pumps of the RH and VD plant are two other large consumers of process steam. As an alternative to the steam jet pump, there are mechanical pumps which are already used in other steel plants. Compared to the steam jets such pumps have much lower operating costs. With a purchase of a new vacuum pump, this technology should be considered.
