Abstract

The permeability of a sinter-mix is a key factor to characterize the sinter structure and porosity and thereby affects its performance in the blast furnace. In the current work, the opportunities offered by the structure analysis and simulation software GeoDict have been used to explore the relationship of permeability and porous structure in an iron ore sinter sample. The pore structure data have been taken directly from the Computed Tomography (CT) analysis of a sinter lump. In addition, virtual packings of sinter green mixes were constructed. Specific surface areas of the materials are calculated and compared to available BET data. The extracted estimates of the pressure drop are compared to Ergun-correlation values and related experimental permeability data. The structure simulation technique combined with advanced CT imaging technique will not only help to understand the morphology of the sinter pore structure in a better way, but on the long term sight, will also provide an idea on the optimal mix parameters for the production of better quality sinters.
