Abstract

The state of the primary material, the calibration of the tools and the rolling mill settings have a significant influence on the quality of the inner surface of seamless tubes. Prior investigations and the relevant literature confirm the piercing process to be main influencing processing step at the voestalpine Tubulars GmbH und Co KG. The aim of this work was the finite element modelling of the process, the development of a model for the evaluation of the forming conditions and the implementation of the latter methods. It was shown that a classification of the primary material with damage models doesnt lead to the predictive accuracy to improve the process since the quality of the primary material can hardly be covered with this method. Microstructure modelling was not supposed to alter the results significantly. The analysis of the forming conditions dependent on the geometry of the piercing plug leads to the assumption that the production with the original rolling mill settings is near the optimum. Future work concerning the improvement of the quality must be coupled with the production of the billet in the steel mill.
