Abstract

During the recycling of aluminium residual salt slag is produced. The slag contains small amounts of metallic aluminium which is extracted from the slag through various retrieval processes. When the slag is produced during the metallurgic process its temperature is very high, therefore it has to be stored until the temperature is low enough for the retrieval processes to start. Storing slag in that way has a disadvantage: the amount of aluminium slowly decreases because of aluminium oxidation inside the hot salt slag. The Kärntner Maschinen Fabriken Egger GmbH (short: KMF) has therefore constructed an apparatus in which the salt slag is cooled down so the oxidation is prevented or slowed. In this thesis a program has been configured in MATLAB that allows one to estimate the temperature decrease in a salt slag during the cooling process within the KMF - machine. First results show that the program has the ability to forecast reasonable temperature decrease rates, but the accuracy is still too low for full industrial implementation. To increase the accuracy both measurements on the apparatus itself and additional experiments for calibration of the model are needed. Various analytical and calculation methods were used to find the salt slag parameters needed for the program mentioned above. One set of analytical methods was developed that allow a full parameter generation of a particular salt slag within a few hours. This set of methods still needs to be tested for validity on various salt slags.
