Abstract

During the forging process of a high-nitrogen alloyed Cr-Mn austenitic stainless steel on a long forging machine surface cracking occurs frequently even if similar grades exhibit sufficient formability. Firstly, the precipitation behavior of this particular steel was examined in this work. Secondly, the hot workability was investigated using a Gleeble 3800 thermo-mechanical simulator where hot tensile and hot compression tests were performed. No precipitates were found in the hot worked samples. However, grain coarsening was shown to have a negative influence on the hot workability. The decreased hot workability compared to a standard alloy can presumably be explained by sluggish dynamic recrystallization due to the presence of coarse grain or due to the different alloying system.
