This thesis analysis the quarry activities of the Holcim (Schweiz) AG, which runs two cement plants in Eastern Switzerland. Currently Holcim uses cartridged explosives. Due to the increased performance of bulk emulsions in Europe, this thesis investigates now possible advantages of a change to bulk site sensitized emulsions for the Holcim. In the first part the current drilling and blasting activities are analysed. In the second part the findings of six blasts per quarry using the bulk emulsions are presented. The comparison of both technologies shows clearly that using bulk emulsions is more cost efficient in both quarries.
