Abstract

This master thesis addresses the implementation of a new measurement technology for the documentation of the tunnel face of a hard rock TBM driving realised at the Tulfes-Pfons construction lot of the Brenner Base Tunnel constructed by ARGE Tulfes Pfons, a bidding consortium of Strabag AG and Salini Impregilo S.p.A. The documentation of the tunnel face is done using a camera-based recording system, which was developed as part of TBMonitor a R & D project in cooperation with Geodata GmbH and the Chair of Subsurface Engineering of the University of Leoben. The camera system provides high-resolution images and colour-coded relief images of the full face. To get the most ergonomic order of the camera positions, several mounting options were tested in the approximately 20-month operating time. Here are 5 or 4 camera positions, from which the tunnel face is recorded during the rotation of the drill head without contact forces, have proven to be sufficient for imaging the full face. For the assembly of the system there is no need to modify or adapt the drill head as disc cases are used to mount the camera. These images allow for an engineering geological assessment of the tunnel face and thus a control of the correctness of the geological model. These documentations result in a more objective basis of assessment of the tunnel face for the client and the contractor, ensuring continuous tunnel boring free from disruption. The TBM drive represents a special case lacking a fixed maintenance shift. Thus, the coordination by the contractor turns out to be very important for a successful completion of a recording of the tunnel face. It is an indispensable prerequisite to master the logistical challenges around the use of the camera and to avoid obstructions to the heading. Predictable and unexpected downtime such as due to repairs require a continuous readiness of the camera system and are categorized in the present thesis regarding to be performed in parallel to the tunnel face recordings. In addition, the rock mass proves to be an essential factor in the several months of operation, which allows or prevents the recordings by safety reasons as well as in terms of mobility of the drill head. The thesis presents the application, the use of the camera system and interpretation of its results and can serve as a guide to the use of a new measurement technology.
