Abstract

The fact that the world is in a constant state of change means that companies and their supply chains must continuously adapt to changing conditions. Events such as the Corona pandemic, the microchip bottleneck, the Suez Canal traffic jam, and the passing of the German Supply Chain Act - just to name a few examples - illustrate the role that global supply chains play in corporate success. More than almost any other industry, the automotive industry is heavily involved in complex supply chains, which is the reason why it is particularly exposed to this pressure for change. Based on current developments the aim of this master's thesis is to identify challenges and requirements for future supply chains of automotive manufacturers and to identify necessary measures for the design of future-oriented supply chains. For this purpose, an overview of the theoretical foundations of supply chain management and procurement management as well as the specifics of global supply chains in the German automotive industry was provided at the beginning. Following, a secondary literature analysis was conducted in order to examine the challenges that procurement-side supply chains in the German automotive industry are increasingly facing. Resilience, sustainability, and transparency were identified as key challenges and their importance was underlined by current developments. It was also shown that transparency plays a key role in making supply chains in particular more sustainable and resilient. Based on this, the current state-of-the-art for designing resilient, environmentally, and socially sustainable supply chains in the German automotive industry was presented. Here, the measures identified based on the literature research were summarized in two separate catalogs of measures and classified into different categories. In addition to the theoretical considerations, exploratory expert interviews were conducted in the empirical part of this work to generate additional knowledge about the future design of resilient and sustainable supply chains in the automotive industry and to identify important measures.
