Kunststoffe aus Rest- und Gewerbemüll in Österreich - Anlagentests zur Schaffung einer gemischten Altkunststofffraktion für rohstoffliches Recycling

Research output: ThesisMaster's Thesis

Abstract

As part of the circular economy package, the European Union has legally anchored recycling quotas for solid, mixed municipal waste and plastic packaging as part of the circular economy package. Austria is well on the way to reaching the quota for municipal waste for 2020. The targets for plastic packaging cannot currently be achieved. In the course of a research project of the Montanuniversitaet Leoben and waste management partner companies, two plant variants were tested in order to produce a mixed fraction from waste plastics from mixed residual waste and commercial waste. The plants processed the input materials in such a way that three or four different output fractions were produced (3D-, 2D- and two different fine material fractions). The 3D-fraction was then sorted into a mixed plastic fraction and a residual fraction using sensor-based sorting (near-infrared). These mixed plastic fractions should meet the requirements for feedstock recycling. The 2D-fractions were generally analyzed by manual sorting analyses for possible potential of recyclable material and composition. The particle size distributions of the fine material fractions - supplemented by previous studies on fine fractions from municipal and commercial waste - were intended to provide information on possible proportions of waste plastics in the fine fractions. The results have shown that both plants are able to produce a mixed plastic fraction that meets the requirements for feedstock recycling. It was also shown that the majority of the plastics were collected in the 2D- and fine material fractions, which is why future studies should target the processing of these fractions. A comparison of the plants showed that the plant variant with pre-screening achieved better results. Pre-screening increases the degree of purity of the mixed plastic fraction, increases the proportion of plastics in the 2D-fraction and increases the proportion of fine plastic particles in the fine material.
