The commercial production of Natural Gas allowed the wide use of this energy source and the importance of it for the industry is undisputed. Sometimes, natural gas is indicated to be the bridge energy for the 21st century. The ongoing upheavals in the European Natural Gas market, due to the efforts of the European domestic market last for several years. Related to this re-organization of the market, new opportunities and possibilities opened up for the energy intensive industry, which have a high consumption of natural gas to operate their facilities. In this thesis, first the origin of natural gas and the most important parameters are described in detail. A description of the functionality of the market and the analysis of different price components is also part of this work. After description of the main procurement instruments and their risks and opportunities a 4-stage model of procurement strategies is presented. A self development procurement model, which provides the ability to calculate the usage of different products provided by the liberalized gas market, is used. The resulted data showed that, industrial companies who are willing to act on the liberalized gas market can realize quite a potential for cost saving. Finally, the resulting strategies, derived from the results, may be used as a basis for the development of site-specific or company-specific procurement strategies.
