Abstract

The scope of this thesis is to analyze the production control of the connecting rod production at MAN Diesel & Turbo SE and to develop a concept to improve the controlling process. The goals are to decrease work in process inventory, the lead time as well as the planning and controlling effort of the shop floor manager. The first part of the thesis deals with the theoretical aspects of production control, such as the processes of production planning and scheduling, the differences between production types and the most common methods of production control. Furthermore, the basics of material flow simulations are discussed, a method used in the practical part of this thesis to investigate how the planned changes in production control affect the target figures. The second part focuses on the description and analysis of the connecting rod production, which also provides the data for the material flow simulation. The simulation is used to compare the current situation with the planned changes, to evaluate these and to visualize the production processes. In addition, all experiments and results are presented. In consideration of all identified problems during the analysis phase and the results of the simulation, a concept for a new production control system is developed in order to reach the goals. An action plan proposes further steps to support the implementation of the concept.
