N2 - The geology of the Faeroe-Shetland basin is characterized by thick basalt layers which complicate seismic measurements. For the hydrocarbon exploration in this area, the sediments below the basalt are of importance. A satisfying resolution of these sub-basalt layers by seismic measurement techniques has not been reached yet, because the presence of the thick basalts causes attenuation and backscattering, whenever seismic energy is sent through the bedrock. This thesis concentrates on methods that were developed for improving the resolution of seismic images of the subsurface within the region of the Faeroe-Shetland basin. Especially the application of appropriate filter-methods and velocity-models is described, which the author carried out on a seismic dataset.
