Greenhouse Gas Inventory & Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Potential

Abstract

austriamicrosystems AG is a semiconductor manufacturer that produces analog high performance circuits. For years the company has shown high environmental awareness and has now decided to determine its greenhouse gas emissions. In this project CO2-emissions from the production process, employee commuting, business travel and product transport were evaluated. Emissions from production result from thermal energy conversion (fossil fuels, natural gas, oil), electric energy consumption and from special gases that are used in wafer production. 2007 was set as the base year for the greenhouse gas balance. During that year austriamicrosystems has emitted a total of 35.633 tons of CO2-equivalent. The majority of emissions (87%) are caused by the production process at the two company locations in Austria and the Philippines. 6% are caused by employee commuting, 5% result from business travelling and 2% from product transportation. The second part of the project was to develop short- and midterm measures to reduce the company's overall CO2-emissions. Measures budgeted for 2009 will save approximately 1,000 tons of CO2 per year. In addition a rough evaluation of possible measures to convert austriamicrosystems into a carbon-neutral enterprise has been made. Therefor the construction of wholly-owned power plants, contributions to offset-projects and reforestation were investigated.
