N2 - The Geosciences and Geoengineering Research Department in Fontainbleau has developped a system for the measurement of grain size distributions based on image analysis for the use in industry. The system operates on digital images with 256 grey levels. The analysis is based on the difference in brightness between the shadows at the borders of the blocks and the area that is exposed to the light and therefore appears brighter. As for all systems that work based on images, a sufficient quality of these is a fundamental prerequisite. In a first step, the influence of image taking in the near infrared range instead of the visible light region of the spectra on the image quality was investigated. The work consisted of a literature research in order to evaluate the theoretical limits, followed by some qualitative experiments to confirm the results. Finally, the gain of image taking in the near infrared range compared to image taking in the visible light region of the spectra was evaluated. In a second step, the aspect of the representativeness of the measurement results for the case of the determination of the grain size distribution of blasted material was investigated. The existing installations are not very flexible and rather difficult to implement. Within the scope of this work, a more simple installation – a image taking system installed on a wheel loader – was tested, with the objective to investigate its ability to minimize constraints of the production and to provide reliable measurement
