Abstract

Pipes for the water supply are manufactured by horizontal centrifugal casting. In this procedure a hammered die mould is used and cast iron is cast onto the rotating mould. During the casting process the rotational transport of the melt is critical. In order to determine the friction between the melt and the mould a test plant was build. Horizontal and vertical centrifugal casting investigations for the experimental determination of the friction were conducted. In these experiments water and a low melting Pb-Bi-Sn-alloy were used. The minimum number of revolutions of the mould, which a complete formation of a cylindrical ring of the fluid was detected and the angle movement of the fluid leading edge was measured. In further experiments cast irons was cast onto a rotating plate. From these experiments a dependence of the critical rotational speed and the shift of the liquid angle were determined from the layer thickness and viscosity. These data were successful used as initial parameters for several simulations.
