Abstract
Waste management in the European Union is changing. The main reason for this is the proposed by the increasing recycling targets for municipal waste up to 60% by 2025 or 65% by the year 2030. To achieve these recycling goals, the member countries must find some new ways and methods. This master thesis work is part of the project Competence Headquarter “ReOil” and deals with the recovery of polyolefins in plastic-rich waste streams in the EU member countries (accept of United Kingdom, included Norway). The project partner - OMV Aktiengesellschaft - wants to use this work to find out how much unused recyclable polyolefins exist in the EU. Those polyolefins should be recycled within a new depolymerization process to produce petrochemical goods. The unused secondary raw material should contribute to the fulfillment of the EU recycling targets. In addition, the availability of the polyolefin potential for each country is demonstrated due to various developments of the waste management systems. Since most plastic waste in Europe is either landfilled or thermally/energetically recycled, the question arises of how to get the valuable polyolefins in the EU countries. For this purpose, the potential of polyolefin has been determined of predefined plastic-rich waste streams. Subsequently, the degree of difficulty of obtaining these polyolefins was determined for each country. It turned out that in three EU countries (Germany, Austria, Romania), a national connection to an OMV refinery exists, profitable amounts of unused polyolefins can be yield. However, the difficulty level of obtaining these polyolefins differed. For example, due to the waste management situation in Romania, availability is easiest. Overall, the unused polyolefin potential can be estimated at around 11 million tons per year. The forecast for the year 2030 indicates a continuous increase in secondary raw materials. The development of recycling is especially raising in the transitional and landfill countries, for example by the incorporation of separate collection of waste and the construction of new waste treatment plants.
