Abstract

RHI AG is global market and technology leader in the field of ceramic-refractory materials. As global player the RHI AG employs about 7,300 staff at 31 production sites in Europe, USA, Canada, South America, China and South Africa. In Germany and Austria RHI operates eleven production sites. In 2010 a total of 1,032,451 tons has been delivered, from these production sites, to approximately 1,700 different customer destinations. There could be some optimization potential, based on the diversity of the flow of goods, between the plant and customer and the individual solutions, from each plant, at the area of dispatch and delivery to the customers. The present master thesis develops a concept, including an evaluation for a central distribution warehouse, to optimize the costs in the German and Austrian production sites. The mass flow data, of the German and Austrian plants, were collected. The amount produced in 2010, was assigned to defined regions. Another main focus was the collection of the transport, handling and storage costs, from the end of the production line to the customers. Some alternatives for a central distribution warehouse were prepared, on the basis of the mass flow, according to the regions. The theoretical part of this master thesis focuses on the basics of distribution logistics and network design. Furthermore, it was verified quantitative or qualitative methods were better suitable for the determination of the optimal location for the warehouse, with respect to the requirements of RHI. On the basis of this evaluation, a qualitative method, a scoring model, was designed, to compare and assess the particular alternatives, based on the mass flow analysis.
