Abstract

This thesis deals with the development of a test program for masterbatch carrier polymers. Masterbatches are concentrated mixtures of pigments and/or additives encapsulated during a heat process into a carrier polymer. Typically a masterbatch is composed of 50 weight percent carrier polymer and 50 weight percent additives, like antioxidants, flame retardants, polymer processing aids and colorants. Changes on the raw material market make it necessary to look for alternative raw materials especially for carrier polymers. Therefor it is necessary to know how the polymer properties influence the masterbatch quality. The test program should determinate, if an alternative polymer is useable for established masterbatch products. The evaluation program was tested with different case examples, which were selected and prepared by the company Gabriel-Chemie GmbH. Therfore four polyproplyene, three polystyrene and three polyethylen terephthalat types were investigated. Additional tests were made with three additive masterbatch, to check the functionality of the test program for masterbatches. It was possible to show differences for all case samples. Furthermore it was possible to show, that the test program also works for masterbatches, if some adjustments were made. Finally it was possible to make first statements about the replaceability of carrier polymers. Depending on the results of the case examples it was possible to define the evalation program. The new evaluation program was divided in two steps. The program begins with a preselection, to detect the basic suitability of the polymer. In the second step the main properties of the carrier polymer are tested and compared with the database. To establish parameters for replacebilitiy of carrier polymer it is necessary to test more polymers and to build up a data base.
