Abstract
Electric mobility is an emerging issue all over the world, and it provides Austria with high capacity for protecting the environment and climate. The focus of electric mobility is the car battery. The lithium-ion battery is the pioneer of applying mobile energy storage in hybrid and electric vehicles. Research has to take the entire value-generation chain from materials research to recycling into account. This study is aiming at the end of the value-generation chain, to develop a holistic design for recovering lithium ion batteries. First, safety problems of lithium-ion batteries have to be solved. The main element is the conceptual design of the recycling process. Transportation and storage designs are additionally needed to complete the discussion of the waste management chain. The LIBRES recycling process is based on deactivation by discharge and thermal treatment with subsequent mechanical processing. This process has been derived from the results of a number of experiments. Discharging, disassembly, pyrolysis, mechanical processing and characterization of the recovered material fractions have all been tested to determine the potential utilization. The findings have been used to compute the efficiency of recovery at different levels and for different versions. The calculations resulted in an efficiency of 43-77 %. The legal framework of transportation and storage has been discussed and a corresponding design developed. Transport containers have been selected and their suitability has been tested in co-operation with the firefighting school of Lebring. With regard to storage, the thermal effects of ignited lithium-ion batteries have been calculated.
