Abstract

This dissertation entitled "Energy Efficiency in the Energy-Intensive Industry" deals with the development of a rating model for the evaluation of the energy efficiency of industrial processes. Especially in times of increasing legal and social obligations in terms of sustainable and efficient use of energy, it is of utmost importance for the energy-intensive industry in Austria, to focus more on energy and resource efficiency. Key milestones on the way to the energy future of the 21st century will be the reduction of specific total energy consumption, the implementation of process-related energy efficiency measures and the sensible use of industrial waste heat. In this context, a model based on MS Excel was further developed and supplemented in the context of of this dissertation, which is a targeted tool for companies in the cement, foundry and glass industry, to individually depict the respective energy situation in the production process. It is possible to present the energetic status quo of the process and to find hotspots, where there is space for the implementation of process-oriented energy efficiency measures available. The application of the model is illustrated in the foundry industry; in a project a foundry was energetically balanced and examined for possibilities of improvement. After mapping the process in the model, the process step of heat treatment was located as a point in the production process, where there is potential for increasing energy efficiency. All in all, it can be said that the model provides a targeted and tailored possibility to transparently map and evaluate the respective production process in relation to the topic of energy, while gaining a deeper understanding of the process.
