Abstract

The motivation of the company Druckerei Ferdinand Berger & Söhne GmbH (short: Berger) to accomplish this project was beside others, the ecological concern of the general management. The company Berger already started several projects to improve the processes ecologically. It was noticed that the consumption of fossil fuel and electrical energy was relatively high in comparison with other industrial sectors. Moreover there was a high potential of heat recovery, which had not yet been used, and a constant need of cooling duty, which had been met with a compression chiller. Because of these facts the project Ökoprint had been started, which had to be implemented with a competent partner. It was the task for JOANNEUM RESEARCH to create an optimized concept for the exergetic use of the given energy and mass flows. The aim of this was to create a demonstration project. The main target of the project is an ecological and economical Low-CO2-solution, which could also be used for the whole industrial printing sector. Therefore the following targets should be reached: •A complete and detailed exergetic analysis of the current condition to point out the big-gest potential for optimization. •A list of possibilities how to use the given energy and mass flows more efficiently to minimize the consumption of resources should be worked out. That could be reached by integration of the different energy and mass flows, which are given by the processes. The technical and ecological impact of the possibilities should be analysed and evaluated. •An analysis of possible variants should be made in order to substitute the used fossil fuel by local renewable energies. That should cause a minimization of greenhouse gas output and a reduction of the dependencies of non-local suppliers. Finally a decision should be made, which variant fits the needs of the company Berger best and could be realised technologically and economically. This variant should be used as a concept for the demonstration project.
