Abstract
Slotting, in other words the strategic allocation of storage locations for items, plays a decisive role in the optimisation of logistics processes and the reduction of storage costs. In view of the increasing demands on distribution centres, such as shorter throughput times, growing competitive pressure and the need for efficient picking processes, the optimisation of storage location allocation is becoming increasingly important. However, there is no uniform consensus in the literature regarding the definitions, objectives and influencing factors of slotting. Vague definitions and different objectives make it difficult to clearly delineate and apply theoretical approaches. In order to close these gaps, this master's thesis attempts to clarify the definitions, objectives and relevant influencing factors by conducting practical interviews with experts. The aim of this master's thesis is to identify relevant objectives and strategies for cost-optimised slotting on the basis of a comprehensive literature review and the findings from the expert interviews. The objectives and strategies described in the literature are compared with the practical experience gained from the interviews. From this comparison, the central influencing factors that are decisive for the allocation of storage space are derived. In the further course of the thesis, these influencing factors are analysed with regard to their interactions in order to understand how they influence each other and jointly contribute to increasing efficiency and reducing costs in warehouse operations. The comparison of theoretical and practical approaches makes it possible to work out deviations and similarities and to gain valuable insights into how efficiency can be increased and costs reduced through optimised warehouse space allocation. The work thus provides deep insights into the interaction of theoretical models and practical applications and shows how optimised storage space allocation can contribute to improving logistics processes.
