Abstract

The objective of the present work was to investigate the influence of different slag compositions on the refractory wear of MgO-C lined steel ladles. After a literature study aiming at identifying the composition of slags typically used in secondary metallurgy, a campaign of induction furnace tests was carried out at the RHI AG research center in Leoben. The experiment results exposed some shortcomings in the experimental procedure used by the industrial partner. Another significant part of this work consisted in the development of an alternative dynamic refractory wear test for MgO-C products. In this case, a test series identical to the induction furnace campaign was performed. A comparison between the two experimental setups showed clear advantages of the developed refractory wear test over the existing test method. For that reason, a future cooperation between the RHI AG and the Chair of Metallurgy is planned in order to upgrade the developed method and use it as a standard testing procedure for refractory wear.
