Abstract
The technical limitations of conventional drilling methods are currently under review. New innovative technologies have become necessary to push performance. OMV Austria Exploration & Production GmbH together with the Chair of Drilling and Completion Engineering at Montanuniversitaet Leoben have continued the research of Dr. Wilhelm Sackmaier et al. 2014 with a master thesis on Drilling with Casing. The master thesis “Drilling with Casing – Performance Analysis and Technical Optimization”, as the title indicates, deals with two core topics. OMV Austria E&P GmbH has introduced Drilling with Casing in the Vienna Basin for the surface section to improve drilling performance and cost. After a general introduction to the company, the geological environment and the Drilling with Casing technology, the first main topic “Performance Analysis” is an evaluation of executed Drilling with Casing surface sections. The actual value of this technology change is analyzed and compared to former conventional projects. The thesis describes the process of how the data was selected, processed and evaluated. It provides a series of charts to visualize potential time and cost savings as a basis for further decisions. Finally, a conclusion on the Performance Analysis discusses benefits of implementing of Drilling with Casing technology. The second main topic “Technical Optimization” deals with an anti-collision issue that occurred when Drilling with Casing was used for the surface section on cluster locations. Especially on cluster locations, where anti-collision and magnetic interference from neighboring wells is an issue, the verticality of the surface section is crucial. Drilling parameters and bottom hole assembly (BHA) configurations seem to influence drop and build-up tendencies. This phenomenon is called drift and is analyzed in this thesis. Findings of this study can be used for further optimization for drilling the surface sections with minimum build-up, assuring verticality of the wellbore. Finally, conclusions of the Technical Optimization give information to reduce the risk of undesired drift tendency and a recommendation on operational parameters and BHA geometry.
