Abstract

Soil nailed walls increase the tensile and shear strength of surrounding soil by the installation of rod-shaped reinforcements (soil nails). Through the formation of tensile forces in the soil nails, a composite body of the grown soil is developed, which increases the stability of the secured slopes. This construction technique often has economic advantages over other types of installations and is therefore suitable for securing slopes (e.g. at incisions, excavations etc.) at suitable ground conditions. In order to apply this method in the immediate vicinity of settlement-sensitive structures, it is crucial to note the deformations in the area of influence of this construction technique. The head displacements and the deformation figure of the wall including the reduction pit forming behind the wall caused by the horizontal wall displacements are factors which influence the overall displacement behavior of a soil nailed wall. As soil nails are installed into the subsoil without prestressing (passive), an initial relative movement between soil and nails is necessary to mobilize the frictional forces along the soil nails. A geotechnical finite element program is used to further investigate the deformation behavior of soil nailed walls. The results of the displacements from the numerical simulations are compared with the results of analytical approaches for the estimation of displacements. The safety factors from a geotechnical design program based on limit equilibrium considerations are compared with the safety factors from the FEM calculations. In addition, the results of 3D-displacement measurements are available for a soil nailed wall designed as a construction pit securing. The measurements are used to adjust the ground characteristics of the numerical models. The comparison of the displacements and the calculated safety factors from the numerical models, the analytical estimates and the 3D-displacement measurements show good agreement. The analytical and numerical estimates of displacements of soil nailed walls provide quite realistic results.
