N2 - In the Instrumentation and Test Systems sector of AVL List, computer-aided design is utilized for the facility design process of test systems. Currently, repetitive tasks are carried out manually throughout the process. Therefore, the introduction of innovative design methods to improve the process's efficiency is investigated. The objective is to find process improvement opportunities and apply contempo-rary design methodologies to the new design process. The knowledge obtained via the review of relevant literature is juxtaposed with the expectations of the stakeholders involved, and the points of unity act as the basis for the modifications. In general, the modifications can be divided into the provision of templates and design automation. The templates provide a common, top-down assembly design using templates. They contain parameterized skeleton models and com-putationally optimized test system components, which serve as the foundation for design automation. The test system configurator can incorporate person-independent information in the form of rules, precalculations, and databases through automation. The modifications are validated using surveys and interviews. In addition, a representative subsystem solution was used to evaluate the implemented changes. The outcome is a design process with fewer working steps, a higher degree of automation, and person-independent knowledge that is integrated.
