Design and Construction of a Vertical Wet Test Bench for Testing Wired-Drillpipe Electrical Connection Mechanisms

Research output: ThesisMaster's Thesis

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis was to design and build a test bench that would support the efforts of the company Advanced Drilling Solutions GmbH to develop a wired drillpipe system and downhole measurement and monitoring subs. Therefore, the first task that was completed in the course of the thesis was a literature research on the necessary tests that have to be performed on such systems during development and production in order to comply with industry standards and common procedures. Based on this research and the current requirements of the company it was then decided to design and build a test bench for testing the electrical connection mechanism of tool joint prototypes for the wired drillpipe system. The test bench was built in a way that both the reliability of the connection mechanism under wet conditions, submerged in mud, and its reliability and durability if the pin and box are brought together off-centered or with angular deviation can be tested. To achieve these targets a mechanical-, a fluid- and an electrical-system were combined. The tests can be done either in manual or in automatic operation mode.
