Abstract

In this study, the conception and construction of a newly designed machine for the equal channel angular pressing process are being discussed. The machine is designed to produce ultra-fine-grained semi-finished products out of middle to high strength precipitation hardening aluminium wrought alloys such as EN-AW-6082. The centrepieces of the machine are two fully controllable hydraulic cylinders with a pressing force of 50 tons respectively, which make it possible to press the workpiece through the ECAP-die with a defined back-pressure. The die has a moveable bottom wall to reduce friction. The combination of applying back-pressure and a moveable bottom wall lead to a better homogeneity of the grain structure as well as to higher possible strains until cracking appears. Different process parameters and their influence on the necessary pressing forces were simulated via finite-element analysis. Finally, a heating system for the die was developed and also calculated via finite-element-analysis. Thus elevated temperature tests become possible. The machine was linked to a centralised database system in order to analyse them more easily.
