Abstract

Highest purity demands are set to the production of maraging steels. In order to certify these requirements, a failure-free and extensive melting in the vacuum induction furnace, pouring under vacuum and remelting in the vacuum arc furnace are necessary. The present work focuses on a detailed documentation of the steel purity and its determination at the remelted ingot over the total production line. Moreover, pool depth and pool profile were investigated, since they are important indicators for the structure and purity of the ingot. Two different methods were applied for the examination of the pool profile along the ingot axis. Moreover the temperature profile was recorded during the whole remelting process. Resulting from a comprehensive documentation of the steel purity over the whole production line, decisive hints regarding the formation and modification of non-metallic inclusions could be found. The accomplished pool profile determination contributes to a better understanding for the remelting of maraging steels. With the aid of an instrumented crucible, necessary temperature data for solidification simulation was measured.
