Abstract
Price competition within the construction industry and the currently difficult state of the overall economy, contribute to a challenging business environment, which makes it increasingly difficult for construction companies to achieve positive results. Therefore, it is important for tunnel construction sites to identify saving potentials and to provide the on-site management with the means and tools to realise it. Using logistic systems can help to prevent additional costs and assist to plan the needs of supporting elements. Supporting elements represent a significant part of the overall costs of a construction site. Logistic systems additionally have a positive impact on challenges such as small sized construction site areas and help to handle fluctuating supporting element consumption. An efficient working inventory management and demand planning contribute to prevent losses in terms of shutdown periods, too much support materials available on the site at the end of the construction period as well as to reduce costs for express deliveries. Therefore a computerised inventory management and demand planning tool was developed for tunnels constructed by using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method, during the extension of underground line 1 in Vienna. Both this programme and the mode of operation are described in this thesis and the results are explained. Two separate programmes for the client and the contractor have been developed, both using Microsoft Excel. The programme aims to provide the client with an efficient tool to compare between the forecasted and actual ground conditions and evaluate them. To that end the programme allows not only to compare between planned and actual tunnelling classes but also between target and actual consumption of construction materials. The contractor’s programme aims to assist the on-site management with the planning for required supporting elements and the choice of the ideal delivery time and quantity. This is carried out by using an inventory system which provides the real-time information of the current stock at the storage place. In addition, the planning of demand is facilitated through the comparison between actual and target consumption and the forecast on required supporting elements.
