Abstract

OMV is the dominant producer in the Vienna Basin and OMVs oil and gas production comes from 900 wells. Particular wells are almost 40 to 50 years old and need work over treatments to secure the annual production targets. The production from general and routine work over activities counts about 10 to 15% of the annual production. These work over treatments are essential for solving production and reservoir related problems occurring during the lifecycle of the well. During the general work over treatments several failures and problems occurred in recent years. The origin of those failures can be related to the reservoir or the technology. To solve those problems new techniques have to be used by OMV in the field. One possibility is sidetracking existing wells with work over rigs. To drill a sidetrack a whip stock and a pendulum assembly or a motor with a MWD system should be used. Short radius sidetracks can be used to produce formations with tremendous sand problems. Ultra short radius sidetracks can be used to increase the production from wells with damaged near well bore sections. This technology could replace hydraulic fractures jobs in thin formations that are near the oil water contact or the oil gas contact. Casing patches can be installed to repair corrosion leaks in the casings without using a milling tool to mill the cement plug. To solve sand problems in unsorted formations, gravel packs should be designed after Tifffin and open hole gravel packs should be used.
