Abstract

Energy efficiency is gaining an increasingly important issue in automotive industry. Lightweight construction strategies allow a reduction of weight. A possible approach is to use fiber-reinforced composites although increasing development, material and production costs. The aim of this thesis is to elaborate a strategy to assess the suitability of long-fiber composites used in structure components. By using the method it is possible to assess individual as well as multiple load cases for shell elements. The favorable state of load for fiber composite is defined as uniaxial constant orientated strain. The parameters used for the assessment are the principal stresses with its orientations and the grade of multiaxiality according to Kuhn. To reduce time steps, a filter based on the von-Mises equivalent stress is implemented. The developed module is now part of the program FEMSITE© by Magna Steyr Engineering. It requires a meshed geometry with all stresses as input. The output file of the assessment is optimized for visualization in Animator viewer 4. The strategy has been tested with a specimen related to compounds of a car body subjected to bending stresses. Finally it was used to evaluate a whole car body resulting in highlighting all areas which are subjected to uniaxial stresses that do not change their direction over time. It has been proofed that the assessment of stiffness optimized plates with crimping is insufficient. As a result of that intentional modification of the plate geometry multiaxial loads are initiated.
