Abstract

Corrosion is the result of chemical reactions between a metal (or alloy) and its environment, resulting in the destruction of the metal. Corrosive processes belong to the category of phase boundary reactions. Focus in this thesis is set to electrolytic reactions, especially phase boundary reaction concerning metal / electrolyte. The electrolyte may already be a drop of water or a liquid film containing dissolved salts. Corrosion damage causes enormous costs annually. Corrosion inhibition means any process of inhibiting the corrosion of metals (or non-metals) caused by one or more substances (corrosion inhibitors). Corrosion inhibitors thus form a protective film on the metal surface in the corrosive medium.
