The principle of mineral processing involves identification of specific material characteristics distributed within feedstock which facilitates their technical separation. This may include physical, chemical or mineralogical properties. When dealing with heterogenous waste streams, this task becomes challenging. Achieving a sharp separation of detrimental and interfering phases is crucial for obtaining recycled materials capable of substituting primary raw materials and attaining a desired product quality from processed concentrates. Research investigations were conducted to develop a method for processing landfill fractions from mechanic-biological waste treatment (MBA landfill material). This material consists of glass shards, ceramic fragments, stones and organic soil. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the relationship between material moisture content and the distribution of valuable components as well as to find a suitable method to prepare the material for mechanical separation by setting selective separation features.
