Highly-filled polymers can be used to manufacture indirectly metal and ceramic components via fused filament fabrication (FFF). For this, special binder formulations are needed. Researchers at Montanuniversitaet have developed special blends of polymers, which allow the fabrication of parts made out of stainless steel, titanium, zirconia and recycled NdFeB. This technique also allows the fabrication of multi-material parts; this has been demonstrated by printing, debinding and sintering parts with layers of zirconia and steel. It has been observed that changing the particle type and content greatly affect the tensile properties of the filaments made with highly-filled polymers and as such the handling of the filaments and the parameters for the FFF process have to be adjusted.
