Efficient resource recovery from iron and steelmaking residues remains a challenge in the metallurgical industry. The Waelz process, optimized for zinc extraction, does not recover the iron from iron-rich dusts and sludges. Dust2Value is a research and innovation project funded by the European Union within the Horizon Europe funding program, introducing a hydrogen-based direct-reduction process, designed for zinc recovery while also producing a secondary-grade direct reduced iron (DRI). D2V aims to minimize the consumption of reduction agents and energy while simultaneously achieving high metallization rates. This becomes possible due to a novel process concept that recovers the majority of the consumed reduction agent while maintaining the high reactivity of treated dusts and sludges throughout the entire reduction process.
