Abstract

Prof. Friesenbichler started to research wear in injection molding over 20 years ago. At the 5th International Conference on Tooling, University of Leoben, Austria 1999 he published the „Wear testing apparatus with integrated measuring technology for measuring the abrasive/corrosive wear on steels for plastics molds“ [1]. With this apparatus Dr. Blutmager a then PhD-Student of Prof. Friesenbichler tested high grade steel specimens on their abrasive wear behavior and found a loss of hardness near the surface that came in contact with the melt [2]. This made it necessary to take the next development step to be able to measure the conditions and circumstances that lead to the phenomenon of hardness loss. This paper will give an overview of all measuring capabilities of the novel „wear testing apparatus with interchangeable measurement setup“ [3] and provide measuring data and conditions that prove the temperature rise due to viscous dissipation above the secondary hardening peak of a X190CrVMo20-4-1 at 520°C.
