Abstract

This project work gives information about temporary and primary roof support systems for medium to large scale roadheaders in roadway development operation. The primary output of this project work is to verify the state of technology of onboard roof support systems for roadheaders and develop a new effective roof support concept in regard to operational health and safety issues. The project work also provides an overview about the performance of rock support systems dependent on time and placement after the excavation sequence. The influence of geology and excavation geometry to the mode of rock fracturing around mining excavations is discussed as well as the influence of mechanical excavation on rock fracturing of excavation walls. Further more the interaction between temporary and primary roof support system of the new support concepts is analysed. Required development rates to match future production are determined by matching bolting and arch handling capabilities of the equipment with support requirements and cutting rates. Finally a feasible roof support concept is defined and every aspect of operational health and safety issues on this new support concept is covered by a risk assessment. Finally an economic evaluation verifies the feasibility of the new roof support concept.
