Abstract

Bigger demands of coal, higher production levels and therefore mining of coal seams that are more remote from surface provoke the phenomenon of increased emission of methane into a mine. This problem has to be accessed not only through providing sufficient ventilation, but also through utilization of methane drainage. The methane drainage is the process through which methane is obtained through boreholes bored into the coal seam and adjacent strata before it can come in to the mine airways. There is great interest in exploiting methane capture to accomplish the targets of safety, alleviation of environmental issues related to greenhouse gas emission and the prospect of usage of the methane as a source of energy. 2874W working face of coal seam №7 of Qianjiaying Coal Mine is the research subject. The three-dimensional simulation model using the FLAC 3D software was established. The model simulates the fracture zone and shows the distribution of formed cracks in the overlaying rock strata. Using this software, the fracture zone simulation of overlaying strata and the height of generated cracks is investigated. What is more, the “U’ type of ventilation is implemented and there is an area, in the upper corner of goaf, where the concentration of methane is high. Based on this information, three-dimensional numerical simulation of methane drainage is established. FLUENT computational fluid mechanics software is used to solve this problem.
