N2 - This work is the first part of OMVs Heavy Oil Production Research Program. It has been set up because of the emerging future importance of this kind of petroleum. The purpose of this work is to provide the reader with an overview of all the problems associated with heavy oils and about EOR methods which can be used for the production of these kinds of oils. The typical properties of heavy oils and a technical description of all possible Enhanced Oil Recovery Methods are given in the main part. This work covers all problems from problems emerging within the reservoir, production problems and upgrading problems to transportation problems, and possible solutions are also described. The ultimate goal was to find the restricting oil and reservoir parameters for the single EOR methods to generate a screening matrix. This matrix is used to get a quick overview of the most promising EOR method for the corresponding reservoirs. A program based on visual basics has been generated to make the screening easier. With analyses of oil samples and the corresponding reservoir data of these samples, the applicability of the screening matrix has been tested.
