Abstract
The purpose of the presented research is to assess a suggested processing route, enabling the production of a low-phosphorus metal product by full reduction of basic oxygen furnace slags (BOFS) with simultaneous removal of gaseous phosphorus. Said processing route includes a reduction step that applies a novel reactor concept called InduRed. It is suggested to reduce BOFS in a well-established reduction unit like an electric arc furnace and to refine the obtained, P-rich metal product so that chromium and phosphorus are selectively enriched in the produced slag. This slag shall contain as little iron as possible but, naturally, will also accumulate manganese. The composition of such a slag was assessed theoretically. Based on these theoretical assumptions, a synthetic, Cr-, Mn- and P-rich slag was produced. Reduction experiments using these synthetic slags were conducted in order to test the feasibility of the process, the advantage of the application of the InduRed reactor concept over standard reduction and the influence of Mn and Cr on P gasification. Highly promising results were obtained. Standard reduction by carbon addition led to a gasification rate of roughly 10%. Applying the InduRed reactor concept, gasification rates of close to 45 % were achieved. The product slag is virtually Cr- and P-free and contains roughly 0.5 m.-% Fe and Mn.The advantage of the InduRed reactor application was attested and will be further investigated.
