Abstract

The Department of Applied Geosciences and Geophysics (DAGG) is the Austrian center of competence for applied geological research. DAGG research and education cover important social problems, e.g. the future supply with mineral and energy resources. Research projects of the four chairs involved enjoy considerable national and international reputation. The Chair of Applied Geophysics uses seismic, petrophysical and palaeomagnetic methods to explore the Earth´s crust, mainly for geothermal and hydrocarbon reservoirs. The focus of the Chair of Petroleum Geology is on hydrocarbon systems, unconventional hydrocarbons, reservoir rocks and coal. Exploration for and investigation of critical raw material deposits are at the focus of the Chair of Geology and Economic Geology. Geochemical fingerprinting methods and quality assessments for mineral raw materials as well as research in mining engineering geology are also carried out. The Chair of Resource Mineralogy deals with the mineralogical, petrological and geochemical investigation of raw materials including precious and critical metals and materials for high-technology applications. In addition, research on fluids in the Earth´s crust is conducted. All chairs actively carry out method development in their respective fields, e.g. in-situ microanalytical methods and organic geochemistry. DAGG research is highly interdisciplinary and is manifested in a network of chairs, institutions and industry partners.
