Abstract

Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing represents a cost effective alternative to powder based additive manufacturing processes. Finite-Element analysis of this process provides deeper insight into process parameters and their influence on manufactured components. DEFORM® is used to replicate an additive manufacturing process of a simple Ti-6Al-4V wall deposited in 32 layers, using plasma arc welding. Thereby differences between the newly available additive manufacturing module in DEFORM® 12.1 and Simufact Welding 8.0 are investigated and documented. By testing and development of adapted partial solutions to utilise new features, a working simulation model is built. Parameter
modification and available feature investigation is conducted to optimise numerical accuracy and approximate reality better. In this process, an approach to model arc welding heat sources for multi-layer additive manufacturing is developed and proposed as further development basis.
