N2 - Bio-based biodegradable plastics are foreseen to increase gradually in the future. The author is an early stage researcher of the Circular Plastics Network for Training (C-PlaNeT) project and the research is focused on improving the capture of bioplastics via waste collection and sorting. For the present paper, the author conducted experiments with polyhydroxybutyrate (PHA), polylactic acid, and six conventional plastic samples using a chute-type near-Infrared sorter. After observing the resultant spectra, it was concluded that PHA and PLA have distinct spectra from each other as well as the 6 conventional plastics considered. Also, PHA was successfully sorted out from mixed plastics for all the 10 trials conducted. The Ph.D. research aims to contribute to the field of bioplastics waste management through NIR sensor-based sorting.
