Abstract

Continuously increasing awareness within people’s minds and steadily rising cost for elimination or mitigation of natural environmental impacts are forcing mining companies to decrease the impact of their operations. Especially in times where the need for bulk materials reduces and stocks are filling up, the costs need to be lowered. Providing customers with mobile equipment with less impact on the surroundings of an operation provides a benefit to customers. The majority of mobile machines are focused mainly on efficiency and operating costs, although environmentally beneficial designs will bring advantages in future. As mining is a conservative business, clients tend to stick to what they know. To overcome concerns, a supplier needs to investigate the pros and cons of a further development. The objective of this report is to determine the possibilities of an ecologically friendly design of a mobile machine in a stacking or loading application and to find possibilities which provide a benefit over common designs. Additionally the consequences of such a design shall be outlined by comparing the impact on the machine’s weight and wheel loads to a conventional construction. A thoroughly literature study, online research and patent review are the basis for this report and outline known equipments and techniques to reduce the environmental impact of conveying applications and the known designs for mobile machines that decrease the impact to the environment. The impact of mitigating measures on a mobile machine in a loading application was compared to a standard design in a project study. The basis for this project was existing data on mobile equipment based on standard designs and individual information available for specific equipment used for reduction of environmental impacts in other applications. The objective to come up with one design for a ecologically beneficial machine type has been failed, due to the fact that project specific requirements will require different types of machines and that existing, protected designs act as constraints.
