N2 - The statement to stay the most efficient and profitable petroleum exploration and production unit in Central and Eastern Europe is part of the mission of OMV Austria. It is not known if the premise to be the most efficient and profitable company is still true. The task of this diploma thesis was to find companies in CEE that were comparable with OMV Austria and, with the help of performance indicators, to create a benchmarking-study. The mentioned statement was checked with the help of this study. The thesis was upgraded by the inclusion of an E&P peer group, which was defined by the OMV. At first qualified companies were identified and a search for appropriable data and information was performed. The performance indicators, which should be used for the study, were defined during a meeting with the advisors of the thesis. The tool of benchmarking, which is a part of the strategic management, was used for the subsequent analysis. Data and information that were public accessible, were used for a descriptive analysis. This analysis was the basis for the following benchmarking-study of the OMV Austria with its E&P peer group and the CEE-companies. The conclusions of the study shows the position of the OMV Austria related to its peers.
