N2 - The scope of this thesis is to develop a concept for a software tool to automate the well planning process while only requiring minimal user input. A vast database of automatically calculated key performance indicators (KPIs) is used as the basis for this undertaking. These KPIs also enable quick, objective and accurate performance analysis and are therefore well suited for time planning. The work shows that after defining the offset data used (e.g. wells in the same field or drilled by same rig) it is possible to describe most of the drilling process by using only relatively few of those variables. The work gives an overview on how the KPIs are obtained at first, defines them and shows how they are used to describe well construction. Furthermore, the use of Monte Carlo Simulation is introduced into the concept. This helps in getting a feel for time related risk involved in routine drilling operations as well as enables sensitivity analysis. A case study done in Microsoft Excel shows feasibility of aforementioned ideas and also exposes areas that need further investigation. Finally an outline of a software tool incorporating the concepts discussed in this thesis is shown.
