Abstract
This master's thesis addresses material selection and investigations regarding wear characterization and measurement methods in the context of cutting blades in single-shaft shredders. Initially, a comprehensive analysis of various materials from which cutting blades can be manufactured is conducted. Different materials are evaluated based on their mechanical properties, wear resistance, and suitability for the specific application. Aspects such as manufacturing duration, supply chains, and availability are also considered. A significant portion of the work is dedicated to wear characterization. Various methods for defining and measuring wear are examined, including hardness measurement using Vickers HV 10 as well as macroscopic and microscopic examinations. The aim is to gain a detailed insight into the wear mechanisms of the cutting blades and identify potential weaknesses. Furthermore, the development of a measurement plan is discussed, which specifies when and how cutting blades in a specific industrial example of a single-shaft shredder should be measured to monitor the wear progression and react early to deviations. Various measurement devices and methods are presented for characterizing wear. The results of the investigations are subsequently analyzed and discussed. Connections between material selection, wear behavior, and shredding efficiency are highlighted, and practical recommendations are derived. Special attention is paid to optimizing the service life of the cutting tools while considering the expected costs through appropriate material selection. The methods outlined can be used in subsequent projects, for example, for process optimizations and changes in tool geometries to improve their service life. Overall, the thesis provides important insights for the further development of cutting blades in single-shaft shredders and contributes to increasing the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the shredding process.
