Well construction and operation design for Surfactant-Polymer (SP) pilot project on Sutorminskoye field (Russia)

Research output: ThesisMaster's Thesis

Abstract

In light of the interminable rise of worldwide petroleum product consumption and the depletion of conventional oil and gas fields, the development and implementation of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) has become increasingly important. Amongst the most promising physicochemical EOR methods is Surfactant-Polymer (SP) flooding. The first EOR operation in Russia will be realized in Sutorminskoye field within the timeframe of 2025-2030. The field is characterized by significant potential for future oil production, marking it as a suitable site for tertiary oil recovery. Subjecting the field to the EOR applicability matrix, out of the different technologies SP flooding was determined to be the most suitable and efficient candidate method. This thesis is devoted to the design of the pilot project, with the principal aim of engineering the construction and operational configuration of the pilot wells. The work consists of three modules. The first part encompasses the relevant scientific and engineering data on the field. The bulk of the thesis is contained in the second part that focuses on the drilling and completion of the pilot wells (4 producers, 1 injector, 1 logging well). In modelling the wells two programs were utilized: Landmark Software was employed to model trajectories, design the wells, and perform stress analysis, whereas PIPESIM Software was used to select appropriate completion types. Furthermore, features of the flooding operation are expanded on, the issue of hydraulic fracturing is investigated, and volumetric pore and injection calculations performed. Lastly, the third part details an economic feasibility study of the SP flooding implementation. The assessment has shown that SP flooding would account for a 13% increase in the recovery factor.
