Abstract

The aim of this master thesis is to examine the applicability of a heat pump technology in the district heating network of the Salzburg AG, with the prior intention of decarbonizing the heat generation. As a result the amount of industrial high-temperature heat pumps should be increased under specific use of heat- /waste heat sources. The project should also be part of progression to be able to react to future developments in the energy market. By the use of waste heat, it is possible to increase the energy efficiency of industrial plants and power plants, to reduce the use of energy sources and their associated costs and achieve an important contribution to climate protection. At the beginning, the current state of the art on high-temperature heat pumps was determined from the theoretical background. Afterwards reference plants were considered in order to determine current application areas and plant configurations. It quickly became apparent that the technology is available for the intended application. Due to this issue, further investigations regarding the using strategies of heat pumps, laws and regulations (for example, the refrigerant regulation) as well as the possibilities of grants could be pursued. Furthermore this was followed by an evaluation of the current situation of the energy supply with a compilation of all production plants and feed points into the district heating network Salzburg-Hallein, as well as current information about energy flows and bottlenecks. After that, all potential locations, together with heat and industrial waste heat sources, which would be suitable for a possible high-temperature heat pump application in the field of action of the Salzburg AG, were combined and rated in a location-technology matrix. For locations with good prospects, an exact investigation of the heat potential with an assessment of the technical feasibility was followed. Concepts with technical and economic calculations were prepared for the selected cases, which could be used as a basis for a specific decision. According to these calculations, three heat sources for a heat pump application and three heat sources for pure waste heat utilization without heat pump were found to be economically meaningful. According to these current results and information, a further detailed investigation is recommended for all of these heat sources, since these would make an important contribution to increase the efficiency of the power plants or rather to decarbonise the district heating generation.
